Symbolic Archetype

Symbolic archetypes have been used in modern day films usually there are more than one archetype in a single movie. Fire is a symbolic archetype that is used in many films these archetypes characteristics are su;n, fire, and sacrifice. The movie Apocalypto uses the characteristics sun and sacrifice. Examples are scenes where they are sacrificing the prisoners on top of the temple to the gods. and decapitating them and then rolling their body down the steps. Another scene is when the moon passes in front of the sun cause a solar eclipse symbolizing the gods are pleased.

Circle is an archetype used in many films these archetypes usually have eternity, wholeness, and new life in them. A perfect example of a circle archetype would be the film The Lion King where in the beginning the circle of life begins playing.

Magical Weapon is an archetype where a hero may use it fully or at all. The movie Lord of the Rings uses archetype. For Example Gandalf use his staff, Frodo's sword glows when enemies are near, Aragon uses his father's sword that was remade, and the main weapon that no can use but the Dark Lord Sauron is the ring.

Haven vs. Wilderness is an archetype used in many films its characteristics are safety/danger. There are many films out there with safety/danger any war movie is a good example of this archetype. The book of Eli is a perfect example where Eli has to travel through a post apocalyptic world and travel west to save the only remaining Bible in existence.

For my last archetype I'm going to use Light vs. Darkness light usually suggest hope and renewal darkness implies unknown, ignorant, and despair. A good example for this archetype would be all six of the Star Wars movies. But I'm going to use Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith where Anakin Skywalker supposedly the chosen one to defeat the Sith is convinced to go to the dark side of the force by Palpatine. Anakin is given the new name Darth Vadar and is sent to kill every Jedi in the Jedi Temple.

Character archetypes

Character archetypes are used a lot in the movies these days a example of character archetype would be movies with heroes. A hero archetype is when a person with  great strength and courage willingness to risk his life. Movies like Batman, Spiderman, Ironman, and Superman are good examples of hero archetypes. In the movie The Dark Night Batman is once again risking his life to save the city of Gothm from his enemy The Joker. In the 2002 film Spiderman Peter Parker is visiting a lab when he gets bitten by a genetically engineered spider he later finds out the bite gave him super powers. He then uses the powers to fight and save the city of New York from the Green Goblin.

Mentor is another commonly used archetype in modern films these movies usually have a teacher or counselor guiding someone through a problem. Examples of mentor archetype are the movies Karate Kid and Lion King. One of my favorite movies with a mentor archetype would be Kill Bill Vol. 2 where The Bride also known as Beatrix seeks revenge on her dad for ruining and murdering everyone at her wedding.

Loyal Retainers is when somewhat like servants who are heroic themselves; help protect the hero and reflect the nobility of the hero. This archetype was used in the movie Lord of the Ring where Sam, Merry, and Pippin protect Frodo on their long journey to Mt. Doom. Later on in the movie Gollum also helps to protect Frodo and guide him to Mordor but he betrays him to keep the ring for himself.

The Initiate is when heroes and heroines who undergo training before their quest. This archetype was used in the movie 300 when someone was born they were inspected to see if they where fit for survival. When they where around the age of 7 they would begin there training to become one of the most elite fighting force the world has known

There are many different archetypes that modern day movie derectors use in there films. A quest is a situational type of archetype where someone searches for a person or object to fix everything. Quest archetypes are used in many films such as Lord of the Rings where Frodo has to travel through middle earth so destory a ring so it doesn't get in the wrong hands. A classic example of a quest archetype is the "Holy Grail".

Journey is a character type of archetype where they send the hero in search of information or intellectual truth. These archetypes have been around for thousands of years and have been passed down from generation to generation. A modern day journey archetype would be Star Wars. Where they send Luke Skywalker on his journey to become a jedi and later face his father Darth Vadar. A classic example of a journey archetype would be the Odessy where Odysseus has his long journey back to his family.

Another archetype i see in modern day films are mentor archetypes. These films usually have mentors, teachers, or counselors guiding someone through a problem. The most recent movie i've seen with a mentor in it would be the new Karate Kid. Where Mr. Han teaches Dre kung fu to compete in a upcoming tournament to fight the kids that beat him up at school. In the movie when Dre is about to fight in the final round his leg is injured by another opponent who gets disqualified. The doctor says Dre shouldn't fight but Mr. Han heals him and Dre goes on to win the tournament.

The task is a situational type of archetype where someone tries to save someone or a race of people. I am Legend is perfect example of someone tryinng to save the human race from extinction. In the movie Robert Neville is working in his lab trying to dicover a cure for virus that mutated the human race. Later on in the movie Robert finds a cure but sacrifices his life to save the medcine in a safe where he left his friend Anna and Ethan who earlier on in the movie saved his life. A classic example of a task archetype would be the Lord of the Rings books where Frodo's task is to destroy a ring.

Research

This is the blog that I'll be using for my research project. My experiences with research is in the past have been alright. I've never really liked research projects unless it is over something i find interesting. My last years project was really interesting because i did it over my favorite artist Dr. Dre. I was able to stay on task because i was so eager to learn more things about him and the impact he has on the music industry. At of all my projects I've done in the past last years was probably the one i enjoyed doing the most  and actually made a good grade on.

NICOLAS KHAYAT. Dr. Dre arrives at the "SHADY National Convention 2004" held at Roseland ballroom, to celebrate both Eminem's new album "Encore" and the launch of his own radio channel "Shade 45" on Sirius Radio in N. Knight-Ridder/Tribune News Service. 28 Oct. 2004. eLibrary. Web. 11 Apr. 2011
